Chris Hughton: 'I would have guided Norwich City to safety'

Chris Hughton claims that he would have avoided relegation had he not been sacked by Norwich City.

Chris Hughton has insisted that he would have guided Norwich City to safety had he not been sacked by the club before the end of the season.

The Norwich board made the decision to dismiss Hughton with five games remaining, but the Canaries failed to earn the points required to avoid relegation under the leadership of Neil Adams.

"With five games to go and with five points clear of the relegation zone, even with a difficult games I was still very confident that we would have got the points that we needed," Hughton told Sky Sports News.

"It's always easy in hindsight but all I can say is that I have always been very confident and was always very confident. It's very difficult to not go and watch football, I went to some four or five games in that period of time but you do have to make sure that you use that break very well."

Norwich owner Delia Smith admitted that it was a mistake to sack Hughton so close to the end of the season.
