Newcastle United break multiple Premier League scoring records after thrashing Sheffield United 8-0 at Bramall Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Newcastle United have broken multiple Premier League scoring records after thrashing Sheffield United 8-0 at Bramall Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Five days after playing out a goalless draw with AC Milan in the Champions League, the Magpies were three goals ahead inside the first 35 minutes against a blunt Blades outfit, courtesy of an Sean Longstaff opener and two headers from Dan Burn and Sven Botman that were both set up by Kieran Trippier.

Newcastle's captain completed his hat-trick of assists when he teed up Callum Wilson for a fourth 11 minutes after half time, becoming just the second player in Premier League history to set up three headed goals after Jason Puncheon for Crystal Palace against West Ham United in February 2015.

Gordon then netted Newcastle's fifth in impressive fashion, curling a sweet strike from outside the area into the far corner just after the hour mark, before Miguel Almiron, Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak got in on the act with a goal each to finish the demolition job in South Yorkshire.

Newcastle's emphatic triumph is their biggest-ever away victory in league football in their 130-year history, as well as their joint-biggest overall win in the Premier League – equalling the 8-0 pummelling of Sheffield Wednesday at St James' Park in September 1999, a game in which club legend Alan Shearer scored five goals.

The Magpies have only ever won by a bigger margin once in their entire league history when they secured a thumping 13-0 victory over Newport County back in October 1946.

Eddie Howe's side have also become the first Premier League team in the division's history to have eight different players score in a single game, excluding own goals.

In addition, the Magpies have become just the third team to score at least eight goals in a Premier League away game after Manchester United against Nottingham Forest (8-1) in February 1999, and Leicester City versus Southampton (9-0) in October 2019.

After beating Brentford 1-0 at home last weekend, Newcastle have now won back-to-back Premier League games and have subsequently climbed up to eighth in the table, five points behind the top four, while Sheffield United are rooted to the foot of the table with just one point from their opening six matches.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Howe said: "I thought we were really good from the start and when the goals came I felt the confidence in the team returned.

"The big thing for us (going into the second half) was that we really wanted to score and we weren't content with three and I want that mentality to run through the team.

"We shared them around a bit today. There were important ones there for Alexander Isak to score and Sean Longstaff, for me he is a goal-scoring midfielder. So some really important ones for the individuals."

On keeping three clean sheets in a row, Howe said: "It is a welcome return to form in that regard because we were so good defensively last season and we weren't as watertight at the start of this one. It is a welcome boost for us because we know we have top quality defenders."

Discussing the 8-0 scoreline, Newcastle striker Wilson added: "I wouldn't be able to explain it myself. We did a lot of research on Sheffield United. We knew it was going to be a difficult game.

"Once the first and second went in we had so much pace and the only disappointing thing is that we could have been even more clinical.

"I'm delighted to get the three points and get the goal," Wilson continued. "Especially having missed a few chances in the first half. I was frustrated at half time that I hadn't got on the scoresheet. Once Kieran [Trippier] put his head up I knew there was no doubt. It was concentration and making sure. I missed a few, but this one has got to go in."

Newcastle now turn their attention to next Wednesday's EFL Cup third-round clash with Manchester City at St James' Park, before playing host to Burnley in the Premier League next Saturday.
