Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is "not very positive" about the injury that Gabriel Martinelli suffered in Monday's 2-1 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted that he is "not very positive" about the injury that Gabriel Martinelli suffered in Monday's defeat to Everton.

The Olympic gold medallist started the encounter at Goodison Park before going down with a suspected hamstring issue in the 71st minute, with Arteta electing to replace him with Eddie Nketiah.

Martinelli was able to walk off the pitch, but Arteta is not optimistic about the Brazilian attacker's status as he confirmed that he "felt something" in his hamstring.

Speaking to the press after the defeat on Merseyside, Arteta said: "I don't know we will have to assess him. He felt something in his hamstring so I'm not very positive about it."

The Gunners lost Emile Smith Rowe to a knock before the game but were able to welcome Granit Xhaka back from a serious knee injury ahead of schedule, with the Switzerland captain completing the full 90 minutes.

Demarai Gray and Richarlison won the day for Everton after an opener from Martin Odegaard, who admitted that his side "stopped playing" after going 1-0 up.
