A report claims that Tottenham Hotspur could end up handing sacked boss Jose Mourinho up to £20m in severance pay.

Jose Mourinho is reportedly in line for a £20m compensation package following his shock Tottenham Hotspur sacking.

Tottenham confirmed the departure of Mourinho on Monday morning, just six days before they face Manchester City in the EFL Cup final.

The 58-year-old only replaced Mauricio Pochettino in the Spurs dugout in November 2019 and had two more years to run on his contract.

According to the Daily Mail, Mourinho's departure will come at a cost for the Lilywhites as they will have to pay the Portuguese a large severance fee.

It is claimed that Spurs could hand over up to £20m to Mourinho should he remain on gardening leave for the remainder of his contract.

However, that is substantially lower than the £30m they would have had to pay the former Manchester United boss had he triggered certain bonus-related clauses.

Mourinho departs the North London outfit having won 44, drawn 19 and lost 23 of his 86 matches at the helm.

Julian Nagelsmann is the early favourite to replace Mourinho at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, though Bayern Munich are also keen to appoint the RB Leipzig head coach.
