Sunderland 'close to signing' ex-Newcastle United defender David Edgar

Jack Ross confirms that Sunderland have looked into signing versatile former Newcastle United defender David Edgar, who currently plays for Ottawa Fury.

Sunderland manager Jack Ross has suggested that the club are working on a deal for former Newcastle United defender David Edgar.

The 42-cap Canada international spent four years at St James' Park at the start of his career after emerging through the academy setup.

Edgar has since gone on to represent Burnley and Birmingham City since departing Newcastle in 2009, while more recently he has plied his trade in the USL Championship with Ottawa Fury.

A return to the North-East of England could now be on the cards, as Sunderland appear to be ready to move for the 31-year-old.

Asked about the Black Cats' interest in the versatile defender following his side's 4-2 win over Barnsley, Ross told reporters: "I haven't had any confirmation of that at the moment, if we do I'll let you know.

"We wanted to have a look because we don't have a naturally left-sided centre-back. We don't really have a full-back or centre-back in the squad, either."

Edgar made a total of 23 appearances for Newcastle at senior level.
