Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag is confident that David de Gea will sign a new contract at Old Trafford.

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag is confident that number one goalkeeper David de Gea will sign a new contract at Old Trafford in the near future.

The 32-year-old's current deal with the 20-time English champions is due to expire at the end of June, meaning that, as it stands, he will be a free agent heading into July.

However, the Spaniard is widely expected to pen a new contract with the Red Devils before his current one expires, with the stopper still firmly in Ten Hag's plans despite some high-profile errors this term.

De Gea has kept 25 clean sheets in 56 appearances at club level this season, including 17 shutouts in the Premier League, which has seen him win the Golden Glove.

Ten Hag was questioned on the Spaniard following Thursday's Premier League clash with Chelsea, which saw Man United run out 4-1 winners to secure a top-four position in the table.

The Dutchman believes that the two parties "will find each other" when it comes to an agreement.

"I think we want him to stay and he wants to stay, so I think we will find each other," said the Man United manager when asked for an update on De Gea.

Ten Hag was then questioned on why a new contract had not been agreed thus far, but the 53-year-old refused to go into detail surrounding the negotiations.

"I never will give a comment about that, about how negotiations are going," he added.

De Gea made the move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011, and he has represented the Red Devils on 543 occasions in all competitions, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, two EFL Cups, three Community Shields and the Europa League.

The Spaniard has already made more appearances in 2022-23 than in any other campaign for the club, and he could feature twice more before the end of the season.

Man United will be bidding to secure third position in the table when they welcome Fulham to Old Trafford on Sunday, before tackling Manchester City in the FA Cup final on June 3.

There could be big changes in the goalkeeping department this summer, as Tom Heaton only has a deal until the end of next month, and he is not expected to sign an extension.

Jack Butland is only on loan from Crystal Palace, meanwhile, but it has been claimed that the Englishman is wanted by Ten Hag on a permanent basis, with his deal at Selhurst Park due to expire next month.
