Preview: Luton Town vs. Coventry City - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Championship clash between Luton Town and Coventry City, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Coventry City will be looking to maintain their impressive start to the Championship campaign when they travel to Luton Town on Wednesday evening.

The Sky Blues enter the midweek round of fixtures sitting third in the table, nine points better off than 16th-placed opponents Luton.

Coventry's momentum showed no signs of letting up as they cruised to a 3-0 win against Peterborough United on Friday, making it three wins and a draw from their last four games.

Viktor Gyokeres scored twice after Gustavo Hamer had opened the scoring in the West Midlands, making it seven goals in nine appearances for the Swedish striker this season.

Mark Robins's side have defied expectations across the opening seven weeks of the season and find themselves just two points off division leaders Bournemouth.

Indeed, since the start of April, only Bournemouth (39) have accrued more Championship points than Coventry (35), who have won 11 of their 18 league games across that period.

City are without a win away at Luton in the league in five attempts, however, and have won on just two of their last nine trips to Kenilworth Road.

Town are not exactly in the best of form, even if they have made themselves pretty tough to beat this campaign.

After playing out a run of four successive draws, however, the Hatters went down 2-1 to Bournemouth at the weekend and find themselves positioned in mid-table.

First-half goals from Philip Billing and Dominic Solanke put Bournemouth on their way to victory in Saturday's match, before a Lloyd Kelly own goal gave Luton a glimmer of hope.

Now without a win in six games, Nathan Jones will be desperate to get his side's campaign back on track with all three points against in-form Coventry on Wednesday.

Team News

Coventry City's Martyn Waghorn celebrates scoring their second goal on September 11, 2021© Reuters

The hosts are expected to be without midfielder Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu until after the international break during a tricky spell for Luton on the injury front.

However, Jones did welcome back Sonny Bradley and Amari'i Bell against West Brom, with the latter playing 45 minutes.

Jordan Clark is the favourite to fill in for Mpanzu, while Carlos Mendes Gomes is another in line for a recall to the side.

As for Coventry, Gyokeres will be the first name on the teamsheet as his seven goals have been worth seven points this season - no championship player has been more valuable.

Fankaty Dabo is City's only known absentee as he continues to serve a suspension, so Robins may well stick with the same XI that started against Peterborough last week.

That will mean Martyn Waghorn, who assisted a goal last time out, retaining his place alongside Gyokeres in attack.

Luton Town possible starting lineup:
Sluga; Bree, Burke, Naismith, Bell; Clark, Osho, Berry; Gomes, Adebayo, Cornick

Coventry City possible starting lineup:
Moore; Hyam, McFadzean, Clarke-Salter; Kane, Hamer, Allen, Maatsen; O'Hare; Waghorn, Gyokeres

We say: Luton Town 1-1 Coventry City

Coventry have been in fantastic form, whereas Luton have struggled for victories, but the Sky Blues do not have a great record at Kenilworth Road.

Town have picked up four draws this term, while Coventry were held by Millwall in their most recent away game, so we are backing this one to end all square.
