Preview: Portsmouth vs. Wigan Athletic - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's League One clash between Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Fresh from securing promotion and the League One title, Portsmouth will welcome Wigan Athletic to Fratton Park for their final home game of the season.

The hosts are looking to extend their 17-game unbeaten run, while the visitors will be hoping to record a second straight victory.

Portsmouth will return to the Championship for the first time in 12 years after they clinched promotion and the League One title with a dramatic win in Tuesday's home clash with Barnsley.

Pompey came from behind on two occasions thanks to a Kusini Yengi effort and a Colby Bishop penalty, before defender Conor Shaughnessy netted an 89th-minute winner to seal a memorable 3-2 victory.

Having achieved their goal of promotion, John Mousinho's side will be in a celebratory mood for their final two matches against Wigan and Lincoln City.

While there may be little to play for, Pompey can reach the 100-point mark if they can claim maximum points in both of their final two fixtures, as they also bid to extend a 17-game unbeaten run which stretches back to the middle of January.

Portsmouth will certainly fancy their chances of collecting all three points this weekend, having won seven of their previous eight home matches.

Wigan, meanwhile, will be participating in the third tier next season after managing to steer clear of a relegation battle despite having to contend with an eight-point deduction.

The Latics are sitting in 15th place with 56 points to their name, and they could still finish in the top half of the table depending on how they perform in their next two matches against Portsmouth and Bristol Rovers.

Shaun Maloney's side will travel to the South coast in a positive mood after they ended a four-game winless run with a narrow win over Lincoln last weekend.

Jonny Smith saw his opener cancelled out by Daniel Mandriou, before Charlie Hughes netted a 90th-minute winner to snatch all three points.

As a result of that successful away trip, Wigan now have the opportunity to record consecutive away victories for the first time this season.

Team News

Portsmouth are likely to be without the services of Joe Morrell, Alex Robertson, Regan Poole, Tom McIntyre, Terry Devlin and Tom Lowery.

Joe Rafferty could replace Zak Swanson at right-back after the 23-year-old was forced off in the first half of Tuesday's win over Barnsley.

Mousinho could be tempted to recall Callum Lang, Paddy Lane and Bishop after the trio dropped down to the bench in midweek.

As for the visitors, they are still unable to call upon the injured quartet of Stephen Humphrys, Liam Shaw, Jordan Jones and Josh Stones.

Brentford loanee Charlie Goode will not be involved, having returned to his parent club due to personal reasons.

Maloney has confirmed that Luke Chambers and Sean Clare are in contention to make Saturday's matchday squad following their respective injury issues.

Portsmouth possible starting lineup:
Norris; Rafferty, Shaughnessy, Raggett, Ogilvie; Pack, Evans; Kamara, Lang, Lane; Bishop

Wigan Athletic possible starting lineup:
Tickle; Sessegnon, Hughes, Kerr, Pearce; M Smith, Adeeko; J Smith, Aasgaard, Godo; Kelman

We say: Portsmouth 2-1 Wigan Athletic

Portsmouth could take their foot off the gas after achieving promotion on Tuesday, but we still think that they will produce another strong display to claim a narrow win and extend their unbeaten run to 18 matches.
