Brazilian midfielder Fred reveals his frustration over his lack of starts for Manchester United during the 2022-23 campaign.

Fred has revealed his frustration over his lack of starts for Manchester United this season, with the midfielder struggling to break into Erik ten Hag's first-choice XI at the club.

The Brazil international made the move to Old Trafford from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018, and he has represented the Red Devils on 212 occasions in all competitions, contributing 14 goals and 19 assists in the process.

The 30-year-old has largely struggled to show his best form for Man United, though, and he has been restricted when it comes to starts this season.

Fred only featured in the first XI in the Premier League on 12 occasions in 2022-23, with 23 of his 35 appearances in England's top flight coming as a substitute.

Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes are currently ahead of him in the pecking order, while on-loan Bayern Munich midfielder Marcel Sabitzer was also picked ahead of him before he picked up a knee injury.

Scott McTominay's exit this summer, which is a possibility amid interest from Newcastle United, would, in theory, move Fred up the rankings, but Ten Hag is believed to be keen to sign another midfielder.

Fulham have recently been credited with an interest in the Brazilian, who only has a contract with the 20-time English champions until next June.

Fred, who is again expected to be on the bench for Saturday's FA Cup final, has admitted that he 'wish he had more minutes on the pitch' this season.

"In terms of my own performance, I believe I've played well, although I wish I'd had more minutes on the pitch. Whenever I was on the field, I think I delivered what was expected from me to help the team succeed," Fred told FourFourTwo.

Fred also opened up on Man United's season, which saw them end a six-year trophy drought by winning the EFL Cup at the end of February, while they finished third in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils had been viewed as the favourites for the Europa League, but they were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the competition by Sevilla.

"The club's performance has been good, but as players we dream big and always aspire to win important trophies," Fred added. "We know that last season our results were far from what we wanted. This season has been much better: we won the League Cup, we're in the FA Cup final and we've been fighting for the top four in the Premier League.

"We're conscious that we could have gone further in the Europa League but, all things considered, I've been happy with our season. I was over the moon with my first trophy at the club, which shows that our team is on the right path after years of reconstruction."

Fred has featured on 55 occasions for Man United in all competitions during the 2022-23 campaign, contributing six goals and six assists in the process.
