Liverpool reportedly prepare an approach for Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard viewed as the club's number one replacement for Jurgen Klopp.

Liverpool are reportedly preparing an approach for Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso, with the Spaniard being identified as the club's leading target to replace Jurgen Klopp.

On Friday, Klopp announced that he would be standing down as head coach this summer, and Alonso has since been heavily linked with the position at Anfield.

The 42-year-old was asked about the job on Friday and refused to rule out a return to his former club in a coaching capacity despite insisting that he was happy in his current role.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are planning an approach for Alonso, with the club's ex-midfielder the number one choice to replace Klopp, who has been instrumental to the team's recent success.

The report claims that Liverpool will speak with Alonso to 'ascertain his interest' before contacting Leverkusen, who have the Spaniard on a contract until June 2026.

Alonso turned out for the Reds as a player between 2004 and 2009, winning the FA Cup, Champions League, Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup.

The ex-midfielder started his managerial career with Real Sociedad B, taking charge of the club between June 2019 and May 2022 before taking the Leverkusen job in October 2022.

Alonso has won 41, drawn 14 and lost 10 of his 65 matches in charge of the Bundesliga giants, who are chasing the German title during the 2023-24 campaign.

Leverkusen remain unbeaten in all competitions this season, while they are top of the Bundesliga table, two points ahead of the reigning champions Bayern.

There is believed to be a clause in Alonso's contract which would allow him to leave this summer in order to take charge of former clubs Liverpool, Real Madrid or Bayern.

A recent report claimed that Leverkusen are confident of keeping hold of Alonso despite the strong interest from the Merseyside giants.

Klopp will be fighting to lead Liverpool to four trophies in his final season at the club, with the Merseyside outfit chasing success in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League table, five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City, with the Reds next in league action at home to Chelsea on Wednesday night.
