Chelsea were reportedly planning to make a summer move for Erling Braut Haaland before sanctions were imposed on owner Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea were reportedly planning to make a summer move for Erling Braut Haaland before sanctions were imposed on owner Roman Abramovich.

The 55-year-old was one of seven Russian oligarchs who were sanctioned by the UK government in March amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Chelsea are currently unable to sign players or negotiate new contracts with first-team stars but they have been granted a special licence to continue playing games across all competitions.

According to ESPN, the Blues have grown frustrated that the restrictions are preventing them from pursuing their primary targets such as Haaland, who is arguably the most sought-after striker in Europe.

The 21-year-old marksman is expected to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, with Manchester City seemingly the frontrunners to activate his £63m release clause.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel revealed on Friday that he is optimistic a takeover will be completed in the coming weeks before the May 31 deadline.
