Carpi edge past 10-man Vicenza in Coppa Italia

Carpi defeat Vicenza 2-1 in their Coppa Italia fourth-round clash thanks to strikes from Ryder Matos and Marco Borriello.

Carpi have advanced to the fifth round of the Coppa Italia by defeating 10-man Vicenza 2-1 this evening.

The start of the match was delayed due to dense fog at the Alberto Braglia Stadium, but it eventually got underway after the referee deemed that play could go ahead.

Neither side were able to find a breakthrough in the first half as clear-cut opportunities were hard to come by due to a lack of quality in the final third.

However, the hosts took the lead two minutes after the restart when Gaetano Letizia raided down the left flank and sent a cross into the box for the run of Ryder Matos to head past Richard Marcone.

Carpi were handed the opportunity to extend their lead when Marco Borriello was brought down in the penalty area, which resulted in a spot kick being awarded and the dismissal of Vicenza defender Mario Sampirisi.

Borriello took the penalty and buried his effort into the net to put his side in control of the match.

Leonardo Gatto got a goal back for the visitors with 15 minutes to play after Luca Marrone handled in the box, despite the best efforts of Carpi keeper Zeljko Brkic, who saved the initial spot kick.

Vicenza put the pressure on towards the end of the match, but the home side held out for the victory to advance to the next round of the competition.
