Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder David Ginola says that it is "vital" the club manage to secure a top-four position in the Premier League table.

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder David Ginola has said that it is "vital" the club manage to secure a top-four position in the Premier League table come the end of the season.

Spurs still sit fourth in the division, but are currently just two points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea.

Mauricio Pochettino's side will take on Newcastle United on Wednesday, while Chelsea will face Huddersfield Town on the same night.

Tottenham will enter the clash with the Magpies off the back of a 1-0 defeat at West Bromwich Albion, and Ginola has been left concerned by his former team's current form ahead of the match against Rafael Benitez's side.

"Finishing third or fourth is a priority because it is the only thing left for the club this season. Obviously to see Spurs play in the Champions League again next year, it's vital, it's just vital for the club," Ginola told talkSPORT.

"We have talked so many times about the new stadium, it's going to be a new era for Spurs and they need to play in the best competitions around, so qualifying for the Champions League is a priority.

"They have to win their last two games, but if you look at the game they played last weekend [against West Brom], it was not quite the team we have seen throughout the season and you can lose against anyone if you play like that again."

Tottenham's final Premier League match of the season is at home to Leicester City this weekend.
