Warburton: 'Cancelling season would be ludicrous'

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Warburton hits back at suggestions that the season should be declared null and void due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Warburton has criticised suggestions that the season should be declared null and void amid the coronavirus outbreak.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, all matches in England's top leagues have been suspended until April 4 at the earliest and doubts have been cast as to whether the season will be completed.

UEFA announced on Tuesday that Euro 2020 has been postponed by a year, which may give domestic leagues the opportunity to complete their campaigns in the summer.

Speaking to the official QPR website, Warburton insisted that the season must continue, saying: "There is plenty of speculation about what should be done with the rest of this season.

"I hear some people saying it should be declared null and void. For me, that is ludicrous. The season has to be finished. As things stand, the players have been given this week off and will be reporting back next week.

"We are preparing to play Middlesbrough on April 4 although, in my mind, I am 99.9 per cent certain that fixture will not be played on that date. Whenever the League resumes we have to do our best to make sure the players are fit and ready.

"Are we going to be as sharp as we were for our last game? No. That's the honest reality but we have to do what we can to make sure the loading on the players is right."

QPR currently lie 13th in the Championship, six points off the playoff places.
