David Ginola to return donations for FIFA presidency campaign

David Ginola announces that all donations to his campaign for the FIFA presidency will be returned.

David Ginola's team have confirmed that all crowdfunding donations to support his campaign for the FIFA presidency will be returned.

The former Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur player launched a surprise campaign to challenge Sepp Blatter for the position at the world governing body just 14 days ago.

The 48-year-old's intentions were widely regarded as a publicity stunt after it emerged that bookmakers Paddy Power backed the move with a £250,000 contribution.

Organisers created a crowdfunding page to raise money for their marketing campaign, and it has now been confirmed that all donations will be paid back.

A statement on the 'Team Ginola' website read: "A huge thank you for supporting Team Ginola. The crowdfunding page is now closed. All donations will be returned to those that have pledged.

"The fight is not over. Football still needs to change. I urge you to continue to vocalize your craving for change in football in whatever way you can.

"Let it be known that no matter how small you think your voice may be alone, if we speak together we will be heard. Whilst FIFA may not be an open democracy for the footballing public, our opinions will be heeded, only if we persist."

Ginola needed the backing of five FIFA member organisations to challenge Blatter, who is running for a fifth term as president.
