Jesse Lingard is reportedly set to return to Manchester United next season, as West Ham United cannot afford to sign the midfielder on a permanent deal.

The 28-year-old has managed to get his career back on track since joining the Hammers on loan in January and has even caught they eye of England manager Gareth Southgate, who has reintegrated the midfielder into his first-team squad ahead of this summer's Euro 2020 tournament.

David Moyes is keen for Lingard to stay beyond this season, but according to the Daily Mail, West Ham cannot afford his £100,000-a-week wages, as the club have suffered financial losses over the past year caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Hammers recorded losses of £65m last season and a greater financial hit is set to follow for this campaign.

West Ham are reluctant to negotiate new big-money contracts with current players or new signings at present, until they receive more clarification from the UK Government about the return of fans to stadiums.

Lingard has made 13 Premier League appearances during his loan spell with the Hammers, scoring nine goals and providing four assists.
