Preview: Huddersfield Town vs. Wycombe Wanderers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Huddersfield Town and Wycombe Wanderers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Wycombe Wanderers will be bidding to get their automatic promotion challenge back on track when they continue their League One campaign with a clash against playoff hopefuls Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

The away side are currently third in the League One table, six points behind second-placed Wrexham with a game in hand, while Huddersfield are eighth in the division, two points behind sixth-placed Bolton Wanderers.

Huddersfield have a record of 19 wins, seven draws and 14 defeats from their 40 league matches this season, with a total of 64 points leaving them in eighth spot in the table, two points behind sixth-placed Bolton Wanderers.

Jon Worthington's side will enter the match off the back of a 2-1 victory over Mansfield Town, with that result following back-to-back losses to Charlton Athletic and Lincoln City.

The Terriers were relegated from the Championship last season, so it is not a surprise to see them challenging for a playoff spot at this stage, and it is set to be a fascinating conclusion to the campaign at the top of the division.

Huddersfield have picked up 34 points from their 20 home league matches this season, which is a solid record, but Wycombe have been the best away team in the third tier in 2024-25, securing 36 points from 21 games.

The Terriers have actually won their last two in front of their own fans, scoring seven times in the process, and their form on home soil is likely to be crucial when it comes to their playoff push.

As for Wycombe, the Blues will enter this match off the back of a 1-0 defeat at Reading, which was a setback in terms of their hopes of securing promotion to the Championship.

Mike Dodds' side are currently third in the table, boasting 75 points from 40 matches, which has left them six points behind second-placed Wrexham with a game in hand.

The Blues finished 10th in League One last term, but they are firmly in the promotion mix at this stage, and there is simply no downplaying the importance of this match when it comes to their chances of a position in the Championship for next season.

Wycombe have only ever locked horns with Huddersfield on 13 previous occasions, suffering seven defeats in the process, and it was 1-0 to the latter when the two teams met for the reverse match back in January.

Team News

Richard Kone of Wycombe Wanderers celebrates scoring against Rotherham United, on March 18, 2025© Imago

Huddersfield have not reported any fresh injury concerns from their clash with Mansfield last time out, so there is every chance that it could be a case of same again in terms of team selection.

Ben Wiles has come up with nine goals from midfield during an excellent season, and he will be another starter on Tuesday.

Joe Taylor, meanwhile, has two goals in his nine outings for the club this term, and the 22-year-old will feature in the final third of the field.

As for Wycombe, their line will be led by Richard Kone, who has scored 18 times in the third tier during the 2024-25 campaign.

Head coach Dodds is set to have the same squad available to him from the game at Reading, and he is likely to resist the temptation to shuffle his pack despite the disappointment of the result.

Cameron Humphreys has scored seven times in 43 outings for the club this term, and he will also be in the side.

Huddersfield Town possible starting lineup:
Nicholls; Sorensen, Balker, Pearson, Ruffels; Kasumu, Hodge; Chirewa, Wiles, Roosken; Taylor

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Norris; Grimmer, Taylor, Bradley, Leahy; Simons, Scowen; Reach, Humphreys, McCleary; Kone

We say: Huddersfield Town 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers

Wycombe have been excellent on their travels this season, but Huddersfield have been solid in front of their own fans, and we are therefore finding it very difficult to pick a winner here, ultimately settling on a low-scoring draw.
