DJ Campbell joins Maidenhead United

Former Blackburn Rovers striker DJ Campbell signs for Conference South side Maidenhead United.

Maidenhead United have completed the signing of DJ Campbell.

The 32-year-old, who was recently questioned but subsequently released following allegations of match-fixing, had been without a club since the summer when he was released by Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

It was expected that he would join a Football League club, but the striker has opted for Conference South Maidenhead, who are managed by his friend Johnson Hippolyte.

"Me and DJ have got a father and stepson type of relationship. I'm godfather to one of his kids. We spoke every week when he was trying to find a club, which is beyond me," Hippolyte told the Maidenhead Advertiser.

"I can't believe someone in the Championship hasn't given him a chance. He trained with us to keep himself sharp and this is the next step. He was desperate to get playing again."

Campbell has gone straight into the squad for this afternoon's FA Cup tie against Faversham Town.
