Wolverhampton Wanderers have completed the signing of Joao Gomes from Flamengo on an initial five-and-a-half-year deal.

The 21-year-old midfielder has put pen to paper on a long-term contract which will keep him at Molineux until the summer of 2028, with the option of a further 12 months on top of that.

The deal to bring Gomes, who plays in a deep midfield role, to the Premier League is thought to be worth around £16.5m.

Gomes made 41 appearances for Flamengo last season, helping his hometown club to Copa Libertadores glory in the process.

Since the Brazilian broke into the Flamengo first team, he has won six trophies in the space of three seasons, including a Brasileiro Serie A title and the Copa do Brasil.

Gomes becomes Wolves' sixth signing of the January transfer window, following Matheus Cunha, Mario Lemina, Pablo Sarabia, Craig Dawson and Daniel Bentley through the door for Julen Lopetegui's side.

Wolves currently only sit outside the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference, having won just four games and picked up only 17 points all season so far.

Gomes could make his debut for Wolves when they host Liverpool at Molineux on Saturday - the third meeting between the two sides in the space of less than a month.
