Tottenham Hotspur are only willing to pay £38m for Atalanta BC defender Cristian Romero, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly only prepared to pay €45m (£38m) for Cristian Romero this summer, but Atalanta BC want a fee of €55m (£47m) for the centre-back.

The 23-year-old continues to be strongly linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, while Barcelona have also been credited with an interest in his services.

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are not currently battling Spurs for the Argentina international, but the Premier League outfit are still short of Atalanta's asking price.

Romano claims that Nuno Espirito Santo's side are not prepared to pay €55m (£47m) for the defender, with the capital outfit only offering €45m (£38m) for his services.

Romero scored three times and registered five assists in 42 appearances at club level last term, and a recent report claimed that Atalanta would make it a 'complex' negotiation for Spurs.

Tottenham are looking to sign a replacement for Toby Alderweireld, with the Belgium international joining Qatar's Al-Duhail after six seasons in North London.
