Manchester United 'have never been close to signing Ansu Fati'

Manchester United have "never been close" to signing Barcelona and Spain teenager Ansu Fati, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Manchester United have "never been close" to signing Barcelona and Spain teenager Ansu Fati, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The 17-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough 2019-20 campaign for his Catalan club, scoring eight times and providing one assist in 33 outings in all competitions.

Fati has also started the current season in excellent form, netting five times and contributing two assists in six appearances for Ronald Koeman's side.

United were linked with the Spain international over the summer, with the Red Devils allegedly prepared to pay a large sum to bring the youngster to Old Trafford.

However, according to Romano, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have "never been close" to signing Fati, who recently signed a new long-term contract with Barca, with his release clause being raised to €400m (£367m).

A recent report claimed that Barca had rejected a €150m (£137m) offer for the teenager, although United were not officially named as the team in question.

Fati has now scored 13 times in 39 appearances for his current side in all competitions.
