Manchester United are reportedly concerned that a potential transfer for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is in doubt.

Manchester United are reportedly concerned that their prospective move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong could collapse.

The Dutchman has been one of United's key transfer targets this summer, with Erik ten Hag keen to reunite with the player that he once managed at Ajax.

However, according to The Mirror, the Red Devils are fearful that their pursuit of De Jong could be to no avail due with a number of factors hindering a potential move.

De Jong has previously expressed a desire to remain at Camp Nou, while Barcelona president Joan Laporta stated that the club are not willing to sell the Netherlands international.

Despite Laporta's stance, United believe the bigger obstacle to a potential transfer is an issue of deferred wages, which De Jong is owed by Barcelona.

A recent report suggested that the 25-year-old deferred over £17m in wages and bonuses to help Barcelona through the COVID pandemic.

Although the two clubs have reportedly agreed on fee, performance-based add-ons also need to be discussed before any transfer can be completed.

De Jong, who has four years remaining on his current contract, has made 138 appearances for Barcelona.
