Manchester United are reportedly unlikely to secure the signing of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips, who looks set for a move away from the Etihad Stadium in the January transfer window.

Phillips has fallen down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola and has made just eight appearances for the Citizens since joining the club back in the summer of 2022.

The 28-year-old defensive midfielder came through the ranks at Leeds United and was a first-team regular for The Whites before his £42m move to the blue half of Manchester.

According to Football Insider, Man United had been linked with a move for Phillips in January, but it is now unlikely that the England international will make the switch across Manchester in the upcoming transfer window.

However, the report adds that a loan move away from Man City is still on the cards for the player, with the likelihood of making his move a permanent one in the summer.

It is understood that the likes of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are among the sides that are interested in the services of the former Leeds United star.

In a recent press conference, Guardiola admitted that he is unsure of what is going to happen with Phillips in the future but maintained that he cannot see the midfielder breaking into the current side.

Phillips is believed to be keen on a move away from the league winners in the hopes of retaining his position in Gareth Southgate's England squad for next season's European Championships in Germany.
