Juan Mata reveals that he felt "embarrassed" after ending his first season with Manchester United in 2014.

Juan Mata has admitted that he was left feeling "embarrassed" after Manchester United's seventh-place finish in the 2013-14 Premier League table.

In their first campaign after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson, United under-performed under David Moyes, which ultimately led to the Scot's dismissal less than a year after his arrival.

Although Mata only joined midway through the season and contributed six goals from 15 appearances, the Spaniard has revealed that he felt awkward when facing the club's fans after the last home fixture.

Speaking to the club's official website, the playmaker said: "We were in seventh position in the league, a position Manchester United should never be in.

"I was like I'm going to wave and they're going to boos us and insult us, like they should feel. I come from Spain and know things turn difficult when a team is not performing.

"I didn't want to look at the people, just in case. I was embarrassed."

The 31-year-old has since gone on to score 48 goals from 249 appearances, also winning the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League.
