Darren Fletcher: 'Fourth place not good enough for Manchester United'

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher urges supporters to remain patient during this "transitional period" that they are currently going through.

West Bromwich Albion midfielder Darren Fletcher has described this evening's victory over Manchester United as "massive" in his side's hopes of avoiding relegation.

The Baggies pulled off a shock 1-0 victory at Old Trafford to move seven points clear of the drop zone, with just three games left to play this season.

For United, on the other hand, it was a third defeat on the bounce in the Premier League for the first time since 2001.

Fletcher, who brought a 20-year spell with the Red Devils to an end earlier this year, has now urged supporters of his former club to remain patient in their pursuit of glory.

"The goal all along for them was to finish top four and Chelsea were always going to be tough to catch," he told Sky Sports News. "Manchester United have a new manager and it's a transitional period for them.

"I'm sure everyone at the club will be striving to win the league next season, finishing fourth is not good enough for Manchester United."

On his side's performance, the Scotland international added: "We worked on making it difficult. We tried to make sure the were playing in front of us and dealt with their crosses. We knew we'd have to ride our luck and we did that. The way results went today, It's a massive result for us."

Next up for West Brom is a trip to take on imploding Newcastle United at St James' Park.
