Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich believes that David de Gea still deserves to be the club's first choice, despite the form of on-loan Dean Henderson.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich has urged the club to stick with David de Gea as their first choice next season, despite the form of on-loan Dean Henderson.

De Gea's future at Old Trafford has come under scrutiny in recent months, with the Spaniard having made a joint league-high number of errors leading directly to goals since the start of last season.

Henderson, by contrast, has helped Sheffield United to promotion and a European challenge in their first season back as a top-flight team during his two-year loan at Bramall Lane, resulting in calls for him to be installed as United's number one.

However, Bosnich believes that De Gea has built up enough credit in the bank to still be assured of his spot despite his drop-off in form.

"Henderson has done absolutely fantastic and proven himself to be an excellent goalkeeper," Bosnich told Goal.

"The bottom line is though that De Gea has done brilliantly over a longer period of time, he has had ups and downs but every goalkeeper does, there's no doubt about that. When you are at a bigger club it is far more exacerbated.

"At this moment in time, I would stick with De Gea. Dean Henderson is too good for the bench and it is a waste for him so I would keep loaning him out. Things can change very quickly. De Gea has had ups and downs but over a long period of time, he has been excellent. Unless they get ridiculous money for him, then I would keep him on."

Henderson has kept 10 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, a tally only Burnley's Nick Pope can beat.
