David Beckham is the latest high-profile figure to condemn the European Super League proposal, stating that football needs to value the fans.

Manchester United legend David Beckham has criticised the proposal of the European Super League, taking to Instagram to share his views.

The Inter Miami owner won six Premier League titles and has one Champions League winner's medal from his playing days at Old Trafford, and holds the opinion that football is for the fans.

Beckham condemns a competition that is not based on merit, with the 15 founding members of the breakaway league not having to qualify to enter the competition.

The former England captain wrote on his Instagram page: "I'm someone who loves football. It has been my life for as long as I can remember. I loved it from when I was a young child as a fan, and I'm still a fan now.

"As a player and now as an owner I know that our sport is nothing without the fans. We need football to be for everyone. We need football to be fair and we need competitions based on merit. Unless we protect these values the game we love is in danger."

UEFA has warned that they are planning to impose punishment on the clubs' players by banning them from their international competitions.
