Daniel Sturridge: 'I lacked sharpness in front of goal'

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge admits that he was disappointed that he didn't score more than one goal against Mansfield Town on Sunday.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has insisted that he will be more prolific in front of goal once he has improved his match sharpness.

The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Chelsea last week but his appearance in the club's 2-1 victory over Mansfield was his first match since November.

The England international revealed that he had only participated in three training sessions since his arrival at Anfield and that was a contributory factor in him squandering several opportunities to add to his early goal during Sunday's FA Cup tie.

Sturridge told the Liverpool Echo: "I haven't had much training.

"I've only had three sessions with the lads and then a light session on Saturday before the game.

"I am lacking sharpness in front of goal. I missed a few chances but hopefully once I get my fitness those ones that I missed will go in."

After 55 minutes of the match Sturridge was replaced by Luis Suarez, who went on to score the decisive goal that handed his side a fourth-round match at Oldham Athletic.
