Gareth McAuley: 'West Bromwich Albion weren't good enough against Liverpool'

West Bromwich Albion defender Gareth McAuley admits that his side left it too late to fight back against Liverpool during their 2-1 defeat at Anfield.

West Bromwich Albion defender Gareth McAuley has admitted that his side were not good enough during their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield this evening.

The Baggies were second best for the vast majority of the match, with goals from Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho putting the hosts in control.

McAuley's 81st-minute strike did provide hope of an unlikely comeback from the visitors, but the West Brom goalscorer acknowledged that they left it too late to produce their best.

"We expected a difficult game, that is what we got. We gave them the two goals, they were preventable and we are disappointed with that," he told BT Sport.

"They are a quality team but we should have been better today. We wanted to frustrate for as long as we could and come out and have a go, but it was too late in the game."

The defeat means that West Brom have now won just two of their last 18 Premier League games.
