Japan announce Akira Nishino appointment

The JFA announce that Akira Nishino has been appointed as the new manager of Japan ahead of this summer's World Cup.

The JFA has announced that Akira Nishino has been appointed as Japan's new manager ahead of the World Cup.

Over the weekend, Vahid Halilhodzic was removed from his position after the team failed to win any of their fixtures with South Korea, Mali and Ukraine.

However, the nation's governing body has revealed the appointment of Nishino, who is being promoted from his role as technical director of the JFA.

President Kozo Tashima told reporters: "For the new coach, we had no choice but to promote from within the association as the World Cup is only two months away.

"We thought the coach should be someone who has watched this team the most from within the association."

Japan face games with Colombia, Poland and Senegal at the World Cup.
