Joey Barton: Ross Barkley 'could become best English player in history'

Everton fan Joey Barton says that Ross Barkley could go on to become one of England's all-time greats.

Burnley midfielder Joey Barton has said that Everton's Ross Barkley could develop into the greatest player ever to come from Great Britain.

Barkley broke into the Toffees first team in 2013, making his England debut in the same year, and has started this season in impressive form with two goals in his first three games.

Boyhood Everton fan Barton told talkSPORT that the 21-year-old has the potential to become one of England's greatest players if he can continue his development.

"I think he could go on to become the best we have ever had in this country," Barton said.

"He is a phenomenal player, I think he has got everything – he just needs a little bit of time to settle. I think he is that good he can play anywhere.

"He can use his left foot, right foot and he is six foot two. If handled with care he could be the best player to ever come from these isles."

Barkley's Everton travel to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham Hotspur in the first Premier League match of the weekend tomorrow lunchtime.
