Ryan Williams is Brentford's first signing under new regime

Brentford sign free agent Ryan Williams on a one-year contract after his release by League Two outfit Morecambe.

Championship side Brentford have made their first signing of the summer since they made a change in how the club is run, adding free agent Ryan Williams on a one-year contract.

The 24-year-old was without a club following his release by League Two side Morecambe at the end of last season.

Brentford co-directors of football Rasmus Ankersen and Phil Giles are keen to use statistical analysis to help them sign players, and the latter believes that there is some "unreleased potential" in Williams.

"Ryan is a player who we feel has a lot of unreleased potential and we can really help develop him over the season," Giles told the club website.

The West London club did sign Akaki Gogia on a long-term deal last month, but Williams is the first new addition since the club's new management structure was fully completed with the appointment of Marinus Dijkhuizen as head coach.
