The list of Barcelona's all-time top 10 appearance makers is stacked with players who starred at some point during the Pep Guardiola era.
While Lionel Messi did his thing at one end of the pitch, Carles Puyol was an integral part of the defensive setup at the other, making 616 appearances between 1999 and 2014.
His story could have been very different. Barcelona were prepared to sell Puyol to Malaga in 1998, only for the then-20-year-old to say no. The following year, he started his journey to becoming arguably the club's greatest-ever defender.
By the end of 2003-04, Puyol had been given the captain's armband and retained that role for the next decade. In nine of his 15 seasons at Camp Nou, he would go on to make at least 40 appearances in all competitions.
Puyol's legacy is partly based on his aggressive style and impeccable leadership, yet this was also a player who won a hatful of silverware during his time at Barcelona.
A total of 18 trophies were lifted during his time at the club, including six La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns, while he notably featured in three FIFA/FIFPro World XI between 2007 and 2010.
The 100-cap Spain international would also lift the World Cup with his country in 2010.
To celebrate Puyol's 47th birthday, Sports Mole is challenging you to name the club's top 10 appearance-makers of all time.
