Arsenal may have to help fund DC United's move for midfielder Mesut Ozil, according to reports.

The 30-year-old fell out of favour with Gunners boss Unai Emery last season and has been a target of the MLS side, who are now looking to replace Derby County-bound star Wayne Rooney, throughout much of this transfer window.

However, the Daily Mirror reports that in order for the former Germany international to leave North London he will either have to take a substantial pay cut or Arsenal will have to subsidise the switch.

The former Real Madrid star is believed to have the second-highest wage bill in the Premier League behind the £350,000-a-week Alexis Sanchez picks up at Manchester United, a figure substantially above traditional salaries in North America.

At present, the highest-paid player in the MLS is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is on a reported £115,000-a-week at LA Galaxy.

Ozil's representatives are travelling to Washington next week to discuss a potential deal, despite the midfielder claiming that he is 'determined' to stay at the Emirates and fight for his place in the team.
