It's A Sin actor Olly Alexander is reportedly "in prime position" to replace Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor in Doctor Who.

Whittaker - the show's first female Doctor - is expected to step down from the role at some point next year following a new series and two specials, although her exit has yet to be officially confirmed by the BBC.

According to The Sun, Alexander - frontman of Years & Years - impressed with his leading-man turn in former Who showrunner Russell T Davies's AIDS drama It's A Sin and is now in "advanced" talks to take on the iconic role of The Doctor.

"Olly is on the verge of being announced as the new Doctor. Negotiations are at an advanced stage," a source told the newspaper.

"He's been heavily promoted for the role by Russell - who he's worked closely with on other projects. Russell was impressed with his work and felt he was a great fit for The Doctor.

"It's definitely happening, he's just had to keep quiet about it while negotiations were finalised."

Filming on what could turn out to be Whittaker's final episodes is believed to still be ongoing ahead of the premiere of the new series later this year. body check tags ::
