Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reveals his plans to "renew" the squad in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed his plans to "renew" the Red Devils' squad in the summer transfer window.

The 52-year-old has officially begun work at Old Trafford after watching his side go down 1-0 to Crystal Palace on the final day of the 2021-22 Premier League season at Selhurst Park.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick's efforts saw Man United clinch sixth spot in the Premier League table, meaning that Ten Hag will be leading the side out in the Europa League next term.

The Red Devils are now set to undergo significant changes in the upcoming transfer window, with numerous players set to leave upon the expiration of their contracts.

Ten Hag has affirmed that he is excited to get to work with the current crop of Red Devils' players, but the ex-Ajax head coach is aware that new faces will be required.

"First, we have a break. We will start pre-season on 27 June and I will get a few of the squad, [a few] of the individual players," Ten Hag told MUTV.

"In certain positions we want to renew the squad, but as I said, one year ago, this squad was second in the league, so there is potential and I'm really looking forward to co-operating with the squad.

"I have high expectations from myself and that is also what I demand from my squad. They have to co-operate together and they have to give every day their best. And I would say, for me, good is not good enough. We have to do better."

The likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Lee Grant and Edinson Cavani have all seemingly played their final games for the club, while numerous other players are being linked with transfers elsewhere too.

Phil Jones, Anthony Martial, Eric Bailly, Dean Henderson and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are all being tipped to move on, and goalkeeper David de Gea has insisted that any unhappy players are free to leave the club.

"I cannot wait. I am excited for the next season, new manager, new players. Ones who want to stay, stay at the club. Ones that don't want to stay go out. You don't have to stay here," the Spaniard told reporters after the final-day defeat to Crystal Palace.

Ten Hag has been tipped to bring a selection of his Ajax stars with him to Old Trafford, namely defensive duo Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez amid criticism of the Red Devils' current backline.

Talks have supposedly already been held over a possible move for Timber, and Villarreal's Pau Torres is still thought to be on the Red Devils' radar.

Ahead of Pogba's departure, Man United continue to be strongly linked with a move for Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong, and Blaugrana boss Xavi has refused to rule out the possibility of the Dutchman leaving.

While Martial and Marcus Rashford's futures also remain uncertain, Victor Osimhen and Darwin Nunez are both understood to be on the Red Devils' attacking shortlist, although staff at the club have allegedly pleaded with Ten Hag to keep faith with Rashford.

Ten Hag held his first press conference as Man United manager on Monday lunchtime, and the club have also confirmed the appointments of Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren to work alongside the Dutchman.
