Man United 'face penalty fee if they do not extend Edinson Cavani contract'

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani is reportedly in line to pocket £1.7m from the club if they decide against triggering his one-year contract extension.

Manchester United will supposedly have to fork out a penalty fee to Edinson Cavani if they decide against keeping him on the books for next season.

The Uruguay international has made quite the impression at Old Trafford after joining as a free agent last summer, banking six goals and two assists in 17 Premier League matches.

Cavani is under contract at United until the summer with the option of a further year, but the Red Devils are reportedly reluctant to trigger the one-year clause given his age and recent injury woes.

Should Cavani be let go by United at the end of the current campaign, ESPN reports that the former Paris Saint-Germain forward would be in line for a €2m (£1.7m) payout from the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has previously confirmed that he will sit down with the 34-year-old to discuss his future when the season concludes, but the Red Devils continue to be linked with a move for a new centre-forward regardless.

Erling Braut Haaland is reportedly at the top of the side's shopping list, while Eintracht Frankfurt's Andre Silva has also been linked with a switch to Old Trafford.
