The final season of The Crown will reportedly end slightly later than originally planned, with the last scenes set in 2005.

The epic Netflix drama, which charts The Queen's record-breaking reign as British monarch, will come to an end in late 2023 with the release of its sixth season.

The show was expected to end shortly after the turn of the new millennium - around 20 years ago - but according to The Sun, the decision has been taken to wrap things up with Prince Charles's second marriage, to Camilla Parker-Bowles - now the Duchess of Cornwall - in 2005.

"It's a small but significant shift because it's seen as marking the start of an era which becomes more focussed on Princes William and Harry and their father," a source told the newspaper.

"The marriage of Charles and Camilla is treated like the end of one turbulent period in the Windsors' story, and the start of a whole new one."

Rumours continue to persist about the future of The Crown beyond its scheduled end, with mooted spinoffs including the reign of Queen Victoria, The Queen's reign through the 21st century or the pre-Queen Edwardian and Georgian period. body check tags ::
