Former Coronation Street star Kym Marsh has joined the cast of the upcoming Waterloo Road revival.

After seven years off the air, the school-based drama is returning to BBC One for a new series later this year.

Several of the stars from the show's original run, including Angela Griffin and Adam Thomas, will be back for the new instalment - and now a host of new cast members have also been announced.

Marsh - best known for playing Michelle Connor on Corrie - will play the part of Nicky Walters, a worker in the canteen and mother to two pupils.

Other new cast members include Jo Coffey as the headteacher's PA Wendy Whitwell, Vincent Jerome as joint deputy head Lindon King, James Baxter as second deputy head Joe Casey and Sonia Ibrahim as social worker Jamilah Omar. Another former Corrie star, Rachel Leskovac, will play head of English Coral Walker.

"We're incredibly excited to announce our new cast, and we believe that alongside the return of Kim Campbell (Griffin) we're creating some new iconic characters for the next generation of Waterloo Road," said exec producer Cameron Roach.

"We look forward to the audience joining them in the staff room."

Filming on the new series has just begun in Manchester. body check tags ::
