Veteran presenter Clive Myrie has been announced as the new host of long-running quiz show Mastermind.

The 56-year-old will replace John Humphrys, who announced last month that he has decided to step down after 17 years in the role.

Myrie has worked as a journalist and newsreader for the BBC for the last 30 years and currently hosts BBC One's Six O'Clock News and Ten O'Clock News, in addition to the BBC News Channel.

"What a privilege it is to take on this new role," said Myrie.

"Mastermind with Magnus Magnusson formed the backdrop to my youth, and now to be at the helm is a dream come true. I'm excited and can't wait to get stuck in."

BBC entertainment director Kate Phillips added: "Clive will be a superb host, witty, wise and with a wicked sense of humour, he's a consummate interrogator who also understands the fear involved when facing a barrage of questions in the spotlight."

Myrie's first episodes will be filmed in July for transmission later this year, while Humphrys's final episodes will be broadcast next month.
