The BBC has reportedly taken the decision to axe this year's Strictly Come Dancing wrap party due to fears over coronavirus.

Today, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a new range of measures - including more mask wearing and working from home - in an attempt to combat the effects of the fast-spreading Omicron variant.

According to The Sun, producers on Strictly have told the show's cast and crew that the annual wrap party, which takes place after the final episode, has been cancelled because of the COVID concerns.

"Everyone will be gutted as it's been such a long and painful series in many ways. There's been injuries, COVID scares and intense competition," a source told the newspaper.

"Everyone was looking forward to letting their hair down and celebrating what's been a closely-fought race.

"It would have also been the first time many of them have been back in the same room since launch, so there would have been plenty to discuss and catch up on.

"But with things not quite clear how Omicron will unfold, everyone has decided to err on the side of caution and shelve the plans."

This year's Strictly final is scheduled to air on December 18.
