Legendary comedian Barry Humphries is said to be in a "stable" and "responsive" condition in a Sydney hospital after suffering medical issues earlier this week.

The 89-year-old - known for his drag alter ego Dame Edna - was first hospitalised in February after falling at home and has since had a hip operation, but complications from that procedure saw him readmitted at the start of the week.

On Thursday night local reports incorrectly reported Humphries as being in an "unresponsive" state, but a spokesperson for the St Vincent's Hospital has now confirmed that he is comfortable.

"Reports that he is unresponsive are not accurate," they said. "He remains stable in the hospital in the best hands."

Following his hospitalisation, a statement issued by his family said: "Barry Humphries is currently in hospital receiving treatment for health issues.

"Barry would like to thank everybody for the support and good wishes he has received but would like more and more.

"He would also like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at St Vincent's Hospital."

Humphries's family, including his wife Elizabeth Spender, have been at the star's bedside all week. body check tags ::
