A couple of months later than planned, this year's Academy Awards will take place on April 25 and honour the best of cinema from a year like no other.

With coronavirus having decimated the cinema industry in 2020, big film releases were few and far between - and instead, streaming services became the temporary home for new movie content.

Here, Media Mole details how to watch all of the major contenders at this year's Oscars.



Mank

Starring: Gary Oldman, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins

Plot: Black-and-white drama about screenwriter Herman J Mankiewicz's development of Citizen Kane in the 1930s and '40s.

How to watch: Mank was released worldwide via Netflix on December 4.



Judas and the Black Messiah

Starring: Lakeith Stanfield, Daniel Kaluuya, Jesse Plemons

Plot: Biopic about Fred Hampton, chairman of the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party in the 1960s, and the organisation's infiltration by a 17-year-old FBI informant.

How to watch: Judas and the Black Messiah is available for purchase for £15.99 through Sky Store, Amazon Prime Video and Google Play.



Nomadland

Starring: Frances McDormand, David Strathairn

Plot: After her husband dies, a middle-aged woman trades in her hometown life to go travelling around the US in a van.

How to watch: Nomadland will be available via Star on Disney+ in the UK on April 30.



The Father

Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Olivia Colman, Mark Gatiss, Imogen Poots, Rufus Sewell

Plot: Drama about a man coming to terms with his progressing memory loss as he battles dementia.

How to watch: The Father is set for a cinema release in the UK on June 11.



Minari

Starring: Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri, Alan Kim

Plot: Drama set in the 1980s following a family of South Korean immigrants trying to carve out a new life in Arkansas.

How to watch: Minari is available to watch through VOD providers such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Sky Store for £9.99.



Sound of Metal

Starring: Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff

Plot: Drama about a metal drummer who starts to rapidly lose his hearing.

How to watch: Sound of Metal is available via Amazon Prime Video from April 12.



The Trial of the Chicago 7

Starring: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Keaton, Frank Langella, John Carroll Lynch, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance

Plot: All-star drama about the Chicago Seven, a group of anti-war protestors who were charged with inciting riots in the 1960s.

How to watch: The Trial of the Chicago 7 was released on Netflix UK in October.



Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Starring: Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Glynn Turman

Plot: Based on the August Wilson play, blues singer Ma Rainey embarks on a studio recording session one day in July 1927.

How to watch: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom was released on Netflix UK on December 18.



Another Round

Starring: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Lars Ranthe

Plot: Danish film about a group of teachers who decide to carry out their jobs while secretly drinking alcohol.

How to watch: Another Round is set for a UK cinema release on June 25.



Promising Young Woman

Starring: Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Alison Brie, Clancy Brown, Jennifer Coolidge, Laverne Cox, Chris Lowell, Connie Britton, Adam Brody

Plot: A young woman avenges her friend's rape by pretending to be drunk and vulnerable in order to catch out other potential rapists.

How to watch: Promising Young Woman is available to Sky Cinema and Now TV customers from April 16.



Soul

Starring: Jamie Foxx, Tina Fey, Graham Norton, Angela Bassett

Plot: Animated comedy-drama about a music teacher looking to reunite his body and soul after they are accidentally separated.

How to watch: Soul was released on Disney+ in the UK on Christmas Day.



News of the World

Starring: Tom Hanks, Helena Zengel

Plot: In the 1870s, a Civil War veteran attempts to reunite a young girl with her surviving family members.

How to watch: News of the World was released on Netflix UK on February 10.



One Night In Miami

Starring: Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree, Aldis Hodge, Leslie Odom Jr

Plot: Fictionalised drama about a February 1964 meeting between Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown and Sam Cooke.

How to watch: One Night In Miami was released on Amazon Prime Video on January 15.
