EastEnders will air a special episode to mark 80 years since VE Day next week, it has been revealed.

Next Thursday, May 8, is the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day - the day in 1945 which marked the official surrender of Germany in World War II.

Celebrations such as street parties will be held around the UK, with pubs able to remain open until 1am rather than the default 11pm, in recognition of the significant milestone in British history.

EastEnders' episode being broadcast that day will "feature poignant nods to wartime Britain including historical footage and music associated with World War II and the celebrations that took place across the capital on 8th May 1945".

The episode will also feature the official re-opening of the Queen Vic following its devastating collapse in February, with Phil (Steve McFadden) and Jean (Gillian Wright) convincing Linda (Kellie Bright) to open the doors to the boozer with a VE Day-themed party.

Meanwhile Nigel (Paul Bradley), who is suffering from worsening dementia symptoms, believes that it is 1995 and the party is being planned to mark the 50th anniversary of VE Day.

Executive producer Chris Clenshaw said: "Like many others across the UK who will be marking this poignant moment in history, we wanted to honour and remember those courageous individuals who gave their lives during the war with a special EastEnders episode marking 80 years since V.E. Day."
