Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has said that he does not expect a further update on the programme's future until next year.

The long-running sci-fi show was rebooted under Davies last year as part of a huge deal between the BBC and Disney+ for a number of specials, two full-length series and one season of a spinoff centred around the Sea Devils.

While the first season has now aired, season two was filmed late last year and will make it to air in May 2025 - and only then does Davies expect to hear whether he has the green light for more seasons.

"It's an industry decision, it's like any business – these things take time," he told SFX magazine. "I think the decision will come after the transmission of season two. That's what we're expecting, that's what we've always been heading towards."

Although a third season has yet to be confirmed, Davies has previously revealed that he has already been working on scripts - although with a renewal confirmation potentially not arriving until summer 2025, any new episodes may not premiere until late 2026.
