Coronation Street star Charlotte Jordan has said that her character Daisy will leave behind "a mountain of destruction" when she bids goodbye to Weatherfield this week.
Daisy will depart the cobbles on Friday for a new life abroad amid the breakdown of most of her relationships on the street - including stepmother Jenny (Sally Ann Matthews), whom she is attempting to fleece out of money, ex-boyfriend Daniel (Rob Mallard) and former fling Kit (Jacob Roberts).
"I think it's very bittersweet for Daisy," explained Jordan, who has been on the soap for the last four-and-a-half years. "Weatherfield has been her home for a while now and, early on, was giving her all the things she wanted – family, community, stability, people to love more than she perhaps loves herself – but it's also been the source of so much trauma for her.
"I think we've watched her slowly try to pick up the pieces since her stalking storyline, but she's ultimately realised she doesn't need to stay in a place that's caused her so much heartbreak. And it's just as well she's running far away to the other side of the planet, as she's left a mountain of destruction and angry people in her wake!"
Jenny had been Daisy's rock for much of her time on the Street but the relationship unravelled due to a dispute over future ownership of the Rovers.
"It's so fractured now," Jordan continued, "and it's so sad, as we're used to seeing them so in sync. I think Daisy's harbouring some real resentment there, especially after what Jenny said about her miscarriage and her little brother's death.
"She feels she's very much been backed into a corner here. I suppose that's the only way she can justify her final betrayal of Jenny – it's actually very reminiscent of Jenny's early relationship with Rita (Barbara Knox). It's like Daisy is Jenny's penance for all the grief she used to give poor Rita!"
When Daisy leaves, it will also mark a decisive end to her on-off relationship with Daniel, whom she had at one point intended to marry.
"I think they'll both be each other's 'what if' love story," Jordan mused. "I think we'll all be mourning what could have been.
"I think she also knows, deep down, that if Daniel were fully aware of what she's about to do to Jenny, he wouldn't be willing to let it slide and continue to stand by her side. So it's almost like she's cutting him loose before she can see how disappointed in her he'll be."
Coronation Street continues Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7am on ITVX and at 8pm on ITV1.
