Sky has confirmed that it has signed a new five-year deal to take over as the broadcaster of the ATP and WTA tours.

The agreement, which comes into effect from January, gives Sky Sports exclusive rights in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Austria and Switzerland and covers more than 80 tournaments - and over 4,000 matches - each year.

Amazon Prime Video is the incumbent broadcaster of both tours but has chosen not to renew its rights deal when it expires next month.

In a statement, Sky said that it will "create a new home for tennis all year round" but stopped short of confirming the launch of a dedicated 'Sky Sports Tennis' channel, as has been rumoured.

Stephen van Rooyen, CEO of Sky UK & Ireland, said: "This is a fantastic time to see the ATP and WTA Tours on Sky Sports across our markets, as tennis enters a new era with fresh and exciting talent making their way to the top of the sport.

"We are committed to bringing the two Tours together to elevate both male and female stars, and deliver world-class coverage of the 80 events across 48 weeks of the year; creating a brand-new home for tennis fans."

Sky is also home to the US Open tournament in the UK and Ireland. body check tags ::
