Russia Today has decided to shut down its US operations effective immediately following the channel's removal from the air in multiple countries around the globe.
The Kremlin-backed news channel has come under heavy criticism from all quarters for its coverage of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, peddling Russian president Vladimir Putin's narrative that it is a "special military operation" to "denazify" the country and liberate its people.
On Wednesday a blanket broadcast ban of RT came into force across the 27 countries of the European Union - a decision that also led to RT coming off air in the UK as the satellites used to broadcast the station's signal to the UK are EU-owned.
In the US, television providers have been voluntarily deciding to remove RT from the airwaves, and according to CNN, the boycotts have led to RT shuttering its US operation.
In a memo to staff, RT said that the decision to shut down production was due to "unforeseen business interruption events" and described the job losses as "permanent".
RT America operated offices in Washington DC, New York, Los Angeles and Miami.
