The European Union has announced that the Kremlin-backed news channel Russia Today will be taken off the air following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The station will not be permitted to be broadcast in the 27 countries of the EU, including Ireland, where it has already been removed from the Sky EPG.

The EU has also banned the government-backed Sputnik, a news service that operates online and as a radio station.

Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, said: "Russia Today and Sputnik, as well as their subsidiaries, will no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin's war and to sow division in our union.

"So we are developing tools to ban their toxic and harmful disinformation in Europe."

RT was also taken off the air in Australia last week, while in the UK, TV regulator Ofcom is currently reviewing the channel's broadcast licence. body check tags ::
