Netflix axes cheapest ad-free tier for new signups

:Headline: Netflix axes cheapest ad-free tier for new signups:
Netflix drops its basic ad-free subscription tier in favour of directing customers to its new ad-supported offering.

Netflix will no longer offer its basic ad-free subscription tier to new and returning customers, the company has confirmed.

The move comes as the streaming service instead looks to push users looking for a cheap subscription to its recently-launched ad-supported offering, which is available at £4.99 a month.

The £6.99-a-month 'Basic' offering, which allowed users to watch one stream at a time in SD quality, will be retained for all existing users on the plan until such a point that they cancel their plan or migrate to a new tier.

'Standard with Ads' lets users watch two simultaneous streams in full HD, although content is typically interrupted by a few minutes of non-skippable adverts per hour.

The 'Standard' package, with two simultaneous streams in HD and no adverts at £10.99, and the 'Premium' package, with four simultaneous streams in Ultra HD at £15.99, are unaffected by the change.
